Introduction
We are are situated in Victoria, Australia. Our aim is to breed Brittanys exhibiting correct confirmation with working ability and a sound mind. Puppies are socialised from the moment they are born, and stimulated in every conceivable way to develop their minds and their bodies. Raised in our home these are not kennel babies! (We don't even have a kennel!). Our dogs are from American lines. Our breeding stock have passed hip and elbow scores, eye tests and have been heart tested. We hunt 'with a camera' enabling our dogs to maintain their hunting instinct. We are committed to maintaining our dogs working ability through obedience and agility training and trialling. The information below explains the main characteristics of the Brittany. Characteristics
The most important consideration when considering a Brittany is their need for exercise, both physical and mental. The breed was developed as a utility gundog, that is one that hunts, points and retrieves. In the field the Brittany points and holds his game. He retrieves on both land and water. While Brittanys are keen workers they are a great all-round dog. The same dog that goes out hunting with his owner is also more then capable of being a family pet as well as a show dog. They are wonderful pets, sociable with people and other dogs. Their long standing history of working along side man in the field has made the Brittany very much a 'people dog'. The Brittany is a very intelligent dog which is both good and bad - good in that they can learn just about anything you want to teach them and bad in that they can become bored very easily without activities to keep them busy. It is not a breed that should be left on their own continuously or kept outdoors alone, they need to be part of the family and have attention daily. Exercise is important for a Brittany as the Brittany was developed to work in the field. Basic training is necessary in order to have a well behaved Brittany, as it is with any breed of dog. The Brittany is a medium size dog, the ideal being 47 - 51 cms at the withers. Trainability The Brittany strives to please and develops a strong bond with his owners. Occasionally a Brittany will throw back to one of the harder ancestors in its pedigree, but by and large the breed is most amiable and, in fact, inclined to be somewhat sensitive to harsh correction. The modern Brittany is a fantastic obedience and agility dog, but it is the breed's natural hunting ability that sells him as a breed to the hunter. The Brittany has an excellent nose which guarantees few birds will escape detection. In my own obedience training I have found that Brittanys respond very well to positive training methods rather than the old 'jerk and pull' methods. Clicker training works very well with this breed as this way they can actively participate in the training session, exercising their minds. It is amazing to see how enthusiastically a properly clicker trained Brittany will work. Coat and Grooming The Brittany coat is fine, flat and slightly wavy with feathering on the chest and legs. They are easily groomed, after a day out in the field their coat can be brushed to remove the dirt. The most common colour is orange & white, other colours are liver & white, black & white or roan of any of these colours or tricolour. The Brittany is clipped to tidy them up for the show ring, but this is not important if the dog is not shown. Health Hip dysplasia is a condition that can be found in any breed or cross breed of dog. It is important when considering the purchase of a puppy that both parents are screened for hip dysplasia (although this is not a breed requirement of the Australian National Kennel Control). There are two schemes currently being used by Brittany breeders in Australia, the PennHip scheme and the AVA scheme. With the AVA scheme a certificate is issued showing the dog's hip scores. Both of the dogs parents hip scores should ideally be below the Brittany breed average, currently 11.9.
