Project Management Processes:

There are five processes in project management. These are Initiation, Planning, Execution, Controlling and Closing. How simple is that? The following diagram shows how the processes interact with each other:

The project processes however, are not sequential, but are iterative and simultaneous. These processes exist within the project and within each identifiable phase of the project lifecycle (PMBoK).

The project management functions are integrated across all the project management processes. So for example, under the planning processes we have lets say activity sequencing. This will be part of the scheduling process and is also part of the project management function “Time”.

The processes required to initiate, execute and close a project successfully are a complex interaction across all the phases of the project. These processes must be clearly defined and their associated project management procedures identified. Each organisation may have their own project management model, however, the core project management functions required to deliver that project successfully will be the same.

Basically a process is a set of activities that convert an input into an output. So let's look at these processes in a bit more detail. Click on the links to the left for more information.
