What is swing?
Swing music is a style of jazz. It was played by the likes
of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald,
Glenn Miller and later on by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Retro
swing bands such as Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Royal Crown Revue and
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy have taken a new swing sound to a new generation.
Swing dancing is jazz dancing to swing music. It can be fast, wild
and explosive, or it can be slow, sexy and graceful. No matter what
- it is fun and it allows you to express yourself like no other
dance can.
Where can I see it?
You can start by grabbing a copy of the following videos:
Swing Kids, Malcolm X and The Mask along with a pile of older films
such as A Day at the Races or the best ever, Hellzapoppin'. Better still, why not
come along and check out Perth's swing scene. We have some great
bands right here and you can find us all about town - find
out where.
Who learns swing?
Everyone and anyone! Our students and social scene are from as diverse
array of backgrounds and ages as you can imagine. The main thing
that unites us all is the dance, music and the great fun we have.
