Remporter Schnauzers - South Australia
Andrew Kidd
About The Schnauzer
In Australia, England and New Zealand the original
of the three Schnauzer breeds is called the Schnauzer. In the USA and
elsewhere it is called the Standard Schnauzer, while in German it is
the Mittelschnauzer.
|
On this site the breed is referred to as either
Schnauzer or Standard Schnauzer. If all three breeds are referred to,
it is as "the Schnauzers".
It must be remembered that the three Schnauzer
breeds are separate breeds and not different sizes of the same breed. While
the Schnauzer was the major contributor
|
 |
in the development of the Giant and Miniature
Schnauzer, other breeds also made significant contributions. The
breeds, while not differing significantly in look, except for size, do
differ in subtle ways.
Always remember, that each dog is an individual and
will have its own personality traits.
|
| The modern day Schnauzer
comes only in the colours of black and of salt and pepper. The breed is
robust, intelligent and adaptable. The Schnauzer requires human
companionship and thrives as a member of a family, being great with
children and loyal protector and watcher of home and hearth. |

|
The Schnauzer, though, is not
a guard dog in the sense that many people associate with that term - a
Schnauzer should not be vicious or unresponsive to its owner. The
Schnauzer sees its duty as alerting you to what is going on and making
sure that any intruder knows that a Schnauzer is about. |
|
It's as a family companion that the Schnauzer
thrives, known as the "dog with the human brain" and the
"kinder-watcher" they are discerning and are not easily fooled. Ours
really loved having a baby in the house to protect. They would sit under
the baby's cot and make sure that no-one
|

|
walked out the door with their charge. However, if
we accepted a visitor, then our dogs know that they too accept that
person as a member of the household for the time they were there.
They have a naturainstinct for both carting and
herding.
|
Schnauzers are a docked breed. Tail docking is a
painless procedure undertaken before the nervous system of the puppy
has fully formed (generally at 3 - 4 days). Unlike lambs, pupppies are
born before they are fully formed. Whereas a lamb is mobile and aware,
a puppy has no sight or hearing and only limited sense of feeling. This
feeling does not extend all the way to the tail (refer Prof R Fritsch - an
academic veternarian and the Council of Docked Breeds
for more information.)
Many of the reasons stated for not docking have no
validity, anyone who knows the breed will tell you that they
communicate well with docked tails and that they do not need their
tails to balance. Studies show quite clearly that traditionally-docked
breeds that are left undocked are far more likely to suffer later
damage and injury. Tail docking of puppies is like vaccination - a
minor and painless procedure that reduces the chance of later pain. If
your vet says that he or she cannot not dock a tail without causing
pain, ask them why when many, many breeders and other vets (see UK Vets for
docking) can.

Remporter
is owned by Andrew and Marion Kidd and is located in South Australia.
Andrew and Marion are both Standard Schnauzer judges, between them they
have judged breed specialties in Australia, the USA, Canada and Great
Britain. Andrew also judges 102 other breeds.
Amongst our achievements are the highest awarded
Schnauzer in Australia - Aust Grand Ch Remporter Revel In Glory who is
owned and groomed by Jennifer Hollobone and handled by Mick Hollobone.
It is Revel's photo that you see above winning Best In Show at the
Schnauzer Club of SA Championship show (all three sizes) in 1997. Revel
also won the Best In Show award in 2000 under Miniature Schnauzer
breeder Dr F Chappa of Mexico. Revel has also twice won the award of
Runner Up to Best in Group at the Royal Adelaide Show. Revel set the
showring ablaze both in South Australia and Victoria as well as having
New Zealand Champion, Canadian Champion and American Champion progeny.

therapy dog.
The last few years have been wonderful years for
