Valve based compressor amplifiers commissioned by Chris Townend
A marvel of recycling, these two units were custom built to Chris Townend's requirements by Andrew Kay.
They consist of a wide range of used, new & NOS parts from all over the world including Australia. The starting point was the basic Gates STA-LEVEL configuration but with two identical units for stereo operation. Old fashioned point-to-point wiring throughout.
A separate, high performance power supply provides individual regulated HT & filament power. HT ramps slowly over 30 seconds, emulating a valve rectifier. HT supplies are rock steady & noise free. Some design features of the classic AWA & URI175 as well as my own embellishments, were used to maximise performance.
The variable mu gain-control stage features either the classic 6386 twin triode or two separate, matched 5749 triode-connected pentodes.
