Jewellery Selection

Accessorising Advice From Image Consultant - Lin Seesink

Jewellery is the perfect way to bring your outfits together. Whether it is a pair of fabulous earrings, a stunning necklace or eye catching bracelet, all will have the desired effect - providing the pieces are in colours that enhance your personal colouring, are the correct size for your bone structure, as well as the right shape to augment the contours of your face.

Accessories also have a way of diverting attention away from areas of our bodies that we do not want anyone to notice. A simple technique such as wearing a pair of beautiful earrings will bring the focus to our face; this can be played up even more with a matching necklace.

Knowing more about your personal colouring will help you determine the correct colours of your accessories. If you are 'cool', you are wise to choose silver, white-gold, chrome-gold or platinum. Whereas if you are considered 'warm', yellow-gold, copper and bronze would better suit your colouring. Choose stones that have a cool appearance to complement the cool metals and warm stones for the warm metals. For example, match cool blue stones with silver, or rich warm amber with gold. Antique metals are great as they work equally well for both warm and cool stones.

The advantage of customised jewellery is that you can combine all of these qualities to produce pieces that will enhance your features as well as having just the right piece for every outfit.

How to Select Jewellery

Finding the perfect present can be hard work, but it's fair to say that most women love jewellery, and when something is commissioned just for them, it shows a lot of thought has gone into your gift and it holds special meaning for the recipient. And who can resist the charm of a one-off piece?

Here are Amanda's top 10 tips to help ensure you have pieces created from the heart that are certain to become a treasured keepsake for your special mum, sister, aunt, grandmother, daughter, girlfriend or even for yourself.

TOP TEN TIPS

  1. Take note of her hair and eye colour. Skin tone can also help.

  2. Does she favour gold, silver or antique metal? Some women wear only gold or silver tones, others like to mix it up a little.

  3. Are you aware of any allergies to metal (some people can only wear sterling silver or 14ct gold, for example).

  4. Are her ears pierced? If not, does she perhaps wear clip-on or screw-in earrings? What length of drop does she prefer (eg. short or long drop, plain, chunky and dangly styles, etc).

  5. Does she like to wear bracelets? Some women choose to only wear a watch and nothing else around their wrists?

  6. What length of necklace does she favour? Choker styles, short, long or medium length? The necklines of her favourite tops are a good indicator if you are unsure, so perhaps make a note of this too.

  7. Does she prefer semi precious stones, or is non semi precious ok? Glass, ceramic and wooden beads, faux pearls, Swarovski crystals and the like can be combined to stunning effect?

  8. Does she have favourite colours, or wear certain combinations of colours? Does she wear the latest fashion palette, or are pastels or earthy tones more suitable? Having a set made to match a favourite new dress or a new outfit for a special occasion (wedding, christening, birthday, anniversaries, etc) is also a terrific gift idea.

  9. Also take note of her usual jewellery style? Does she like elegant, understated jewellery, or are bright, vibrant colours more her style? Of course, you might think it's time she tries something completely new and have something else in mind!

  10. Sometimes the gift recipient's birth stone or star sign can point us in the right direction. If you know someone's birth date, it's interesting to look up their birth stone, month's colours and the meaning behind these. For example, if your birthday falls in December, your colour is sky blue, and your birthstones are turquoise and blue topaz, which are said to represent protection and union. Likewise, many of the gemstones Make a Strand uses are said to have a variety of different health giving properties and meanings, which can add a deeper significance to your gift.

If none of the above ideas help, please feel free to email Make a Strand a photo of the lucky lady in question, or bring a photo along to your initial consultation with Amanda, if you are able to meet in person.
