OUTSIDE LEARNING FOR AN INSIDE CHANCE
At KARABINER, the children are placed – with their family’s support – into a “perceived wilderness”, an intensive, yet supportive outdoor environment, where self-sufficiency, problem solving and teamwork become vital to daily success.
The KARABINER program is carefully structured and fully supervised. It employs proven educational systems that are designed to be of therapeutic benefit, while carefully helping young people to develop positive attitudes and acceptable levels of social behaviour.
PRO-ACTIVE INTERVENTION
While KARABINER may seem like an unusual idea, we know it works.
This is proactive intervention: providing solutions for tomorrow’s problems, today.
It’s about detecting and addressing issues – such as antisocial behaviour, an inability to concentrate or complete a task, selfishness or lack of confidence – now, before they lead to greater problems later in life.
According to KARABINER’s Janet Leslie, a qualified teacher and youth worker who has spent considerable time studying therapeutic camping programs worldwide, the boys often com into the program below their age/grade level and leave above it.
“The schools in America just love the camps, and the Courts do too,” Janet said.
“These types of pro-active intervention programs give young people another option that can help guide them on a course to become well-adjusted adults.
“In Australia, these types of preventative programs are few and far apart.”
OUR OBJECTIVE: A SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO SCHOOL
Our objective is to ensure that once a young person has completed the KARABINER program, they can successfully return to their original social setting, taking their place in the community and within the educational system.
This isn’t just a pie-in-the-sky hope – we’ve seen it succeed.
In the US, where this model of therapeutic camping has been operating since 1947, similar projects have achieved an astounding 85 per cent success rate in altering troublesome behaviour in adolescents to a point where they are able to continue and their high school education.

A RENEWED AND POSITIVE OUTLOOK
Importantly, kids who complete the Karabiner program will have a renewed and positive outlook on life, and the skills, confidence and self-respect to work towards becoming socially-adjusted adults who can solve problems and make a positive contribution to the community.
