   HISTORY

A brief history of the birth of a legend.
A party of prospectors led by Jimmy Gibbs discovered a promising looking deposit of tin in some wild mountainous country twenty seven km west of the infant settlement of Herberton.
.

John Moffat's arrival back in Herberton from England in 1883 was around the time the news of the find had reached Herberton, so he traveled over the Great Dividing Range to inspect Gibb's find.

So impressed was he by what he saw, that he bought out Gibbs and his mates for £6,000 and moved his home from Herberton to Gibb's Camp, as the junction of MacDonald's and Gibbs Creek was called at the time. This name was not at all suitable for what Moffat hoped would be a booming town so he altered the name to Irvinebank to remind himself of his boyhood home on the banks of the Irvine River in Newmilns, Scotland.

Great Southern Mine, first mine in Irvinebank

This lucky find marked the beginning of one of the most colourful chapters in Queensland's history, and set in motion a chain of event that was to see the transformation of a very important part of Queensland from a wilderness to a very important producer of minerals, agricultural products and timber through the vision and enterprise of one man - John Moffat.

old Irvinebank

Moffat presided over a vast empire of mineral wealth spanning the peninsula and the country at one time controlling over 25% of Australia's base metal exports. His enterprises forged the road and rail links of increasing exploration into the wilderness of unexplored Far North Queensland.
Today the town survives despite the efforts of time, weather and Governments. This unique haven in the western foothills is steeped in history and beauty.
