Digital Photography For The Digital Arts

General Overview:

Photography For The Digital Arts covered the fundamentals of using a digital camera to capture, store, display and modify photographic images for creative use in the digital arts. It included instruction in the use of digital cameras, scanners, and image editing software (Photoshop CS and Image Ready) for artistic purposes related to the emerging Digital Arts and Multimedia Industries. The software was used to manipulate and enhance the images, and then export them for use in a range of different creative assignments. Students learnt the methods necessary to produce printed hard-copy images, as well as how to output work in a variety of digital formats including CD-ROM'S, animations and web pages.

There were a number of different assignments given during the course. The aim of each exercise was to enable the student to think in creative ways while trying to meet all of the criteria given in the brief. This is the same challenge that Digital Arts practitioners have to face when producing Digital Media Content to meet the needs and objectives of the client.

About The Main Assignments:

Artist Challenge:
The first assignment called "Artist Challenge" asked the student to create an artwork based on three of the following seven words or concepts: an edge; shade; a movement; a gust of wind; a shadow; a crack; light. The resulting image could be experimental in nature, as long as three word inspired images were used when creating it.

The images below were captured by me as the starting point for this project and are shown here in their rawest state. Given the location (the TAFE courtyard) they seemed to me to be the closest representations of the theme words that I could find. When I create an image which appeals to me visually, I usually like to play around with its composition until I have made another couple of versions of it - sibling images. The three montages represent my submission for this assignment, and "Art Challenge 1" is my favourite.
