ARTIST'S STATEMENT
From early childhood I have loved drawing and painting. Illuminated manuscripts
have been a passion since I painted my first St Francis Prayer when
I was fifteen. After 20 years I took up painting and drawing again and
became fascinated with the form and function of mandalas which are found in most cultures around the world.
Eventually I decided
to study art formally and at art school explored and enjoyed painting abstract and
colour-field works using acrylics and oils. During that time I was
still painting mandalas as well, my fascination with them increasing over the years and continuing
to this day. I now use watercolours and gouache which are particularly suited to fine botanical work.
I am inspired by a deep
love of nature, poetry and music as well as by traditional and folk mythologies
and mystical philosophies. I find fulfilment
in an eclectic spirituality and have discovered that the mystics of all traditions speak the
same language of Love. My intention is to celebrate the sacredness and
beauty of the natural world, particularly on the microcosmic scale. I
use my art to express appreciation and celebrate this astonishing planet Earth
and mysterious universe. I hope that I can contribute in some small way to other people's awareness of the delicacy and fragile beauty of our environment and that some might be inspired to value it enough to actively care for it in whatever way they can.
I now live with my
dog Lucy, in a beautiful Australian coastal town called Byron
Bay where I am surrounded by mountains, rainforests and wonderful
beaches. It is an area rich in creative people who are drawn here because
of the natural beauty and powerful energies long recognised by the indigenous people of Australia. The local Minjungbal name for Byron Bay is Cavvanba, “meeting place” and it remains a meeting place for people from many different countries who come here to enjoy this unique culture.
