Amat & Amatnatua

This is one of my favourite parts of Strathcarron.  Amatnatua is on the south bank of the Carron and Amat is on the north bank. Parts of the census can be found by clicking the links on the right.

I enjoyed many hours walking around this bit of the world three or four times a year during the 1990s

I have been in touch with a guy from Fife, Ian Horne who is descended from Mr Gustavus Aird Ross. This gentleman was born 30 Aug 1841 and was apparently the first male baptised by the Rev Gustavus Aird at Croick  The Rev Aird was a prominent character during the evictions of Glencalvie in 1845 Ian spent many holidays visiting Amat and his aunty Kate, who lived at Kate's Croft

Another guy I had the pleasure of meeting was the late Mr William McDonald who sadly died April 2005 aged 95. Willie McDonald is also the 3rd cousin once removed of Ian Horne above. Willie had an excellent knowledge of the people of the area, and visitors were often directed to his house where he informed them of their ancestors.
