Bonar Bridge - A meeting of parishioners was publicly called, to be held in Gledfield School on Friday evening, to protest against the action of the School Board in refusing the use of schoolrooms for religious services by members of those who still adhere to the old Free Church.
Rev Norman Campbell, MA, Creich, was in the habit of preaching to large congregations, but at a recent meeting of the School Board it was unanimously agreed to prohibit the holding of religious services in the schoolrooms of Kincardine in future.
At the public meeting on Friday, from forty to fifty persons from various parts in the parish assembled, some of them from long distances; but to their dismay and disappointment, the schoolhouse was closed against them. A good deal of cycling hither and thither to get the key was of no avail; consequently the meeting had to be held under the "vast canopy of heaven".
Mr John Ross, building contractor, Syall, presided, and fully explained the object of the meeting, Mr L Urquhart, Kincardine, acting as secretary. Speeches condemnatory of the Board's action were delivered by Mr Alex Ross, Ardgay Hill; Mr John Macrae, Culrain; and several others. A motion by Mr Urquhart expressing the meeting's feeling against the School Board, seconded by Mr James Ross, Strathcarron, was unanimously carried.
Only one School Board member was present, and he spoke, but he did not get a good reception. It is said that feeling runs high, and that more may yet be heard about the matter.
The Auld Kirk is quiet and serene; but between UF's, FC's and Secessionists, the bulk of the people are, to all appearance, ecclesiastically in a turmoil.

John married Henrietta Macleod, daughter of Roderick Macleod and Dolina Macleod, on 2 Jan 1891 in pont street LONDON. (Henrietta Macleod was born on 28 May 1864 in Assynt, Sutherland ¹⁹ and died on 11 May 1918 in Syall, Kincardine.) The cause of her death was acute gastric catarrh.
