MELANCHOLY AND FATAL OCCURENCE IN THE PARISH OF KINCARDINE

30 AUG 1860

On a Sunday whilst traveling to down the Kyle, the boat carrying 12 people turned over at Invercarron
".. some of the people from the district of Achnagart, in this parish, in preference to walking, came in a boat down the Kyle to Bonar Bridge, a distance of about 6 miles."
".. at 9 a.m. on the sabbath, the following 12 persons left their homes to come by the coble, viz, George Urquhart, Reantyre; Janet his daughter, and Donald his son; Alex. Ross, Rhelonie, his wife (Catherine), Bell his daughter, and Angus his son; Bell and Ann Ross, daughters of John Ross, Gow, Rhelonie; Isabella McKay, daughter of the late Wm McKay, Rhelonie; Angus Ross, Gow; and Donald McRae from Achnagart"
"Only Alex. Ross and Donald Urquhart could swim"
"..by their exertions they succeeded in rescuing Ross's wife (Catherine) and daughter (Bell); (also) Bell and Ann Ross; and with the assistance of James McGregor, grieve, and James Watson, gamekeeper, Invercarron they were brought ashore. Donald Urquhart also brought out his sister (Janet), but life was extinct before he reached land with her. It is believed that were it not for this lad Urquhart none of them would have been saved, as he dived and brought them up..."
".. The other five were then and there drowned"
"..On Monday 20th the bodies of George Urquhart and Isabella McKay were found; and on Tuesday the 21st those of Angus Ross, Donald McRae, and Angus Ross, Gow. .."
