Inverness Advertiser Tuesday, December 21, 1880 Death by
strangulation at Kincardine Ardgay - A melancholy accident
occured in this parish Friday last.
Donald Ross, alias "Beky"
a laborer, residing in the Hill of Ardgay, left his house in
the forenoon for a bag of peats from his stack about a mile
and half distant. On his way homewards, by way of shortening
the distance, he was in the habit, it is said, of crossing a
wire fence, although a gateway on the fence was within a few
yards, and he seems to have done so on this unfortunate
occasion. One of Mr Ross, the Postmasters, farm servants
passing with a horse and cart about a quarter to two o'clock
observed him, and naturally thought at first the man was
resting, but when on nearing him he said, "You are resting,
Donald", he got no answer, the lads suspicions were aroused.
On going to the spot to his horror, he found the man on the
inside of the fence in an uopright position, but quite dead,
and the bag of peats suspended to his neck by the rope with
which the poor man carried it.
